About:
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Maria Alejandra Montero has more than fifteen years of experience teaching a wide range of ages. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the Universidad Nacional Experimental de las Artes in Caracas, Venezuela, and both a Master of Music In Vocal Performance and a Graduate Performance Diploma from Longy School of Music of Bard College where she studied under the guidance of the soprano Jayne West. For more than ten years, Maria was a choir member of the Schola Cantorum of Venezuela, with which she toured the world and had the opportunity to work with world-class conductors, composers and stage directors, including Gustavo Dudamel, Simon Rattle, Claudio Abbado, Krzysztof Penderecki, Osvaldo Golijov, John Adams, and Peter Sellars.
Maria is very flexible in her teaching, always tailoring her methodology, resources and repertoire to the student’s needs and interests, while providing a good foundation and making the lessons as creative and enjoyable as possible. Maria wants her students to love and enjoy what they do in music and in life in general. Coming from a country like Venezuela, Maria strongly believes in the power of social transformation through music. At a young age, she was exposed to elements like social inclusion, musical excellence and collaboration with other choirs and orchestras of the well known program El Sistema. Maria experienced how music can make a difference for people, specifically children. She firmly thinks that access and exposure to music creates new opportunities and brings new meaning to life.
Maria has worked for several organizations in the Boston area teaching piano, choir, voice, musicianship and Spanish. Maria has a big passion for education, music and languages!
